COLORADO
SPRINGS (August 20, 2002)
- USA Judo announced
today the team that will attend the 2002 Junior World Championship on
Jeju Island, South Korea on
September 12-15, 2002. The Junior World Championship is
held in even-numbered years and is the premier event for athletes under
20 years old. It is attended by over 100 countries from all five
Continental Judo Unions.
Many of the medallists in the Junior World Championships have
subsequently won medals in the Senior World Championships and Olympic
Games. Two-time Olympian Hillary Wolf (Colorado Springs, Colorado)
won USA's only gold
medal ever at the Junior World Championships in 1994; four-time Olympian
and 1992 Olympic Bronze medallist Jason Morris (Scotia, NY), won a
Junior World Bronze medal in 1986, and three-time Olympian, 1996 Olympic
Bronze medallist and 1999 World Champion Jimmy Pedro (Lawrence,
Massachusetts) won a Bronze medal in the 1990 Junior World Championship.
In the 2000 Junior World
Championship, Sayaka Matsumoto, Richmond, California, won a silver medal
for the USA in the women's 48 kg category.
