Sayaka Matsumoto Wins USA Judos Fall Classic

East Bay Judo Institutes Sayaka Matsumoto, 19, a sophomore at the University of California, Berkeley, went 4-0 to take the gold medal at the USA Judo 2002 Fall Classic, held on 1-2 September 2002 at the Hurstborne Hotel and Convention Center in Louisville, KY. Over 150 contestants from around the U.S. competed at this tournament.

In her first round Matsumoto pinned Jane Hodges of Kentucky for ippon. In the second round, Matsumoto faced Crystal Brown of the Olympic Training Center, her rival at the 2002 US Senior National Championships. Matsumoto also defeated Brown by ippon by a pin.

In the finals, Matsumoto faced Christina Carrera, also of the Olympic Training Center. In their first match of the day, Matsumoto pinned Carrera with ushiro-kesa-gatame, reverse collar hold, for ippon. Because of the double elimination system used in the tournament, Matsumoto faced Carrera again a second time, and once again dispatched her by throwing her with uchimata for yuko and the win.
