Midwestern Judo Championships

                The Midwestern Judo Championships were held at Prospect High School in Schaumburg, Illinois on Saturday, March 29 2003. Over 400 competitors from around the country competed at this event. 

                East Bay Judo Institute was represented by Sayaka Matsumoto in the female 48kg division, Marti Malloy in the female 57kg. Division, Marija Djokic in the female 63kg division, and Molly O� Rourke in the female 78kg division.

                Sayaka won her first match against Diana Capocasa, the 2003 US Collegiate National champion with juji gatame [arm lock]. She beat her second opponent with an uchi-mata (inner thigh throw) for ippon. She then went on to fight Christine Carrera, the #2 ranked athlete in the US, whom she pinned for ippon. She then fought Christine again in the finals and beat her again by juji gatame for ippon, giving her the gold medal. 

                Marti Malloy won her first match against Mary Harvey with a triangle hold for ippon. She then fought Gina Franseze on whom she applied juji gatame to for the ippon. She then faced Carrie Chandler who threw Marti for wazari twice with sasae tsuri komi ashi. In the loser�s bracket Malloy then faced Amanda White of the Olympic Training Center, whom she threw for ippon with Osoto gari. She then faced Chandler again and was thrown for two wazaris with sasae tsuri komi ashia once again, giving Marti a silver medal finish. 

                Marija Djokic won her first match against Ashley Martini with a yuko with uchimata. She followed suit in her next match when she threw Brittany Caviness for ippon with uchimata. Next she faced Anastacia Krivosta of the OTC whom she beat by a koka with ko-uchi gari. In the finals she faced Ashley  Martini once more and pinned her for the win, giving Marija the gold medal. 

               
Molly O�Rourke lost her first match against Loretta Edwards when she was thrown with a drop seoi-nage for ippon. She faced Katie Mocco in her second match whom she threw with harai goshi for ippon. She won her third match with a taiotoshi (body drop) for ippon. She then faced Loretta again in the finals again where she was thrown for ippon with drop seoinage, giving O�Rourke the silver medal. 

               
Overall EBJI had a record of 13 wins and 4 losses, and two gold and two silver medals. The East Bay Judo Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the teaching of Kodokan Judo.
