Delegation to Judo World Championships in Osaka Announced

COLORADO SPRINGS,
Colo. (September 5, 2003) - USA Judo has announced the delegation that will represent the USA in the 2003 World Judo Championships in Osaka, Japan, September 11-14.  A top-6 finish in any weight category at the World Championships earns a country an automatic invitation to the 2004 Olympic Games for that weight.  All other countries must qualify each weight category through their Continential Union, each of which has been given a participation quota for the Games.  In Pan America, the quota for each weight category is the top 6 ranked countries for men and the top 3 ranked countries for women.  Currently, the USA is ranked in the top 6 for all men's weights and in the top 3 for three of the seven women's weights (52, 57, and 70 kg).  Additional Pan American Olympic qualifying points can be earned for a top-8 finish at the worlds and at next year's Pan American Judo Union Championships in April.

Once a weight class is qualified for the Games, the actual athlete to represent the USA in the Olympics will be deteremined by an Olympic Trials on the first weekend in June, 2004 at a location yet to be  determined.  The top 5 nationally ranked athletes at the close of the national championships on May 1 in San Diego will compete in the trials.  An exception is that any US athlete who places in the top 3 at next week's World Championship will automatically be the Olympic team member unless another athlete, or athletes, place in the top 3 at one of the three A+ level tournaments in Europe this coming winter (Moscow, Paris, and Germany.)  In that case the World Medallist and A+ event medallist(s) will compete in the trials for the Olympic Team spot.

The Olympic Games will take place August 13-29, 2004 with the Judo competition taking place August 14-20.
