OSAKA, Japan (September 14, 2003) - Competition in the 2003 International Judo Federation World Judo Championship in Osaka, Japan concluded today with women's 48 kg and open and men's 60 kg, and open categories.  In total, 569 competitors from 97 Countries, including 238 women and 331 men entered the tournament.

Women 48 kg
# in division 38
Sayaka Matsumoto, Richmond, Calif., faced eventual eventual silver medalist Jossinet from France in the first round.  Matsumoto gripped strongly and had solid ouchi gari attacks, but was thrown with ankle and leg picks.  Jossinet defeated Carrion of Cuba in the second round, Lin of Chinese Taipai in
the third round, and Haddad of Algeria in the fourth round to advance to the semifinals against Matijass of Germany, pulling Sayaka into the repechage.  Jossinet defeated Matijass to face Tamura of Japan in the gold medal match, losing 3 shidos to 2 shidos, winning the silver.  Matsumoto faced Carrion of Cuba in the first repechage round, losing by one yuko to koka (shido) in a close
contest where Matsumoto nearly forced the Cuban into a second shido for stalling that would
have brought the match to golden score.  Carrion went on to defeat Lin of Chinese Taipai, Haddad of Algeria, Hormigo of Poland and Gao of China to earn the Bronze.

Taylor Takata, Colo. springs, Colo., had a first round bye, then lost to Santos of Portugal.   He fought a close match until he was caught with kataguruma for wazari with two minutes remaining.  Santos lost to Taymans of Belgium, eliminating Taylor from the competition.

Men's Open Division
# in division 37
Martin Boonzaayer, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, faced Braindotti of Italy in the first round and was countered with te guruma for ippon while attacking.  Braindotti lost to Mekic of Bosnie Herzogovenia in the next round, eliminating Martin from the competition.
